Charles Palmer

Avalon Foster Group, Advisory Board
Senior Consultant - Entertainment & Learning Technologies
Exec. Dir. of the Center for Adv. Entertainment & Learning Technologies and Assoc. Professor of Multimedia at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology

HUCharles Palmer consults as an expert in advanced entertainment and learning technologies for Avalon Foster Group, and serves as member of the AFG Advisory Board. Currently Executive Director of the Center for Advanced Entertainment & Learning Technologies and Associate Professor of Multimedia at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, his passion is envisioning and developing breakthrough learning and entertainment technologies and then applying them to real-world business and academic initiatives.

His appetite for innovation led him to create new applications for the Virtusphere (including walking through a human heart), advancements in interactive video technology (synthetic interviews), and new practices and applications for gamification and alternate reality games (ARGs) for all modalities of formal and information learning.

A creative educator, administrator, and producer, Charles has inventively employed software and media-based technologies to allow computer users to use speech recognition to interview scientists, entertainment, sports, or political figures—dead or alive. Just ask anyone who’s used his program to chat with Albert Einstein.

Activities such as these aren’t make-believe. They form the core of Palmer’s approach to education, which is hell-bent on bridging the divide between academia and technological breakthroughs by testing the parameters of the unknown.

In addition to his role with Avalon Foster Group, Charles applies his creativity, leadership, and technological expertise to promote the application of technology to contribute to the economic well-being of the region in his position at Harrisburg U. He also oversees the design and development of ventures in new and emerging technologies. Charles is also an adviser to the University’s Learning Technology Masters of Science program, coordinates the Central Pennsylvania High School Gaming Academy, and works with students on research projects ranging from augmented reality and mobile computing to Web application development.

Charles is a creative educator, administrator, and producer who previously served as a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center under Don Marinelli and Randy Pausch. His specialties included multimedia development, education management, project management, entertainment technology, virtual environments, game design and production, and curriculum development.

Charles attended Carnegie Mellon University’s Engineering program and has a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree from the University of Phoenix.
